Bye Bye Baby

I've been umming & aahing for ages about what to do with this chest of drawers. It was part of a set (it, an oval mirror & a sleigh-style cot/bed) which I had made by a local guy when I was renovating the Nursery while awaiting Son #5's arrival. As Bub's about to turn 27, it's certainly time to give this baby a new lease of life. It's actually really useful for storage, the drawers are deep & hold a myriad of stuff. In actual fact, the 2 bottom drawers hold all the boys favourite soft toys that I can't bear to toss out - Big Teddy, Blue Ted, Snoopy, Little Monkey, Mr. Elephant, Teddy Ruxpin, Growly Lion & others. It's currently sitting in the last unrenovated bedroom, which MOTH & I use as one big walk-in wardrobe & general dumping ground/junkroom. We don't have any storage in our bedroom until the 'Builder' starts a Dressing Room addition through the end wall out into the garden - the plans are drawn.

My mind was made up for me this week when I saw this lovely chest in the first pic. I'm happy with the other old 80's pieces I've given a new look to & are now sitting pretty & useful in the Guest Room. So out with the paint & some new handles & I reckon I'll get another 20 years out of this baby.

  1. Absolutely, great idea Millie. The old pine numbers seem to come up really well with a bit of paint. I'm currently looking for a big pine dresser I can transform for the little girl's bedroom. Lovely day to you..Rachaelx

  2. Great idea Millie. Nothing like a coat of paint to give new life to old furniture. And you're not alone with the toys - I have quite a collection of my kids' old toys too.
Looking forward to the 'after' pics,
    Kerri x

  3. Sounds great, just remember to take pictures here in blog land. Nothing like a project in the works to feel all inspired, and put a bounce in the step!!!! Happy Thursday.

  5. Oh, I'm looking forward to progress photos for this! I have two chests of drawers with which I want to do exactly the same, perhaps even to keep the stuffed toys in in years to come.

  6. I think it will scrub up beautifully, Millie. Wow, Teddy Ruxpin is a blast from the past! Some of those toys look like they were very well loved and it is lovely you still have them. My boys inherited my hubby's favourite toy dog that my mother on law hung on to for years... you just need a few Grandkids and then all those drawers will be available for storage!

  7. Can't wait to see the final product. And as we say around here, it's always good to have a project (or twenty) on the go.

  8. Hi Millie,

What a great transformation, a lick of paint will give your dresser.
Love the kids toy collection, and they will enjoy retrieving them one day.

    Happy Thursday

  9. When we moved into this home, I had several pieces painted creamy whites {nice old pieces too-yikes!}.
I've never regretted it. Do it!
But hold on to those darling stuffed animals- they will be handy one day and you will love telling those darling babies tales of earlier days.

  11. I knew you would save the day ;-) Have just written a post on that very thing. I reckon if something is REALLY usefull and practical, find a way of keeping it. Even if it takes a little elbow grease. Looking forward to seeing the result. Pop over to my blog and you'll see a few before and after pieces from 'my old job' that might inspire you ;-)

  13. Hey Millie
Well I'd be holding on to those deep drawers...[ha].. they don't make them like they used to... nothing like having drawers where the bottoms don't fall out!!!

Love those stuffed animals.. such sweet memories for you.... I think the chest will look fabulous white! Have a great week xx Julie

  14. Hi Millie, Oh yes, it will look wonderful with a fresh coat of paint. Your pine dresser is a familiar sight as we've painted MANY walls here at the old farmstead that looked exactly like your dresser. Cheers for paint!! xoxoTrina

With your pizazz, results will be great. Nothing like lick of paint to regenerate xD
