....a Spanish Mission to be exact! The Architect's brief was to create an 'urban-beach feel, not so much beach-house or urban chic, but somewhere in between. A place to live, work, entertain & enjoy the beach-side living.' The client owned both upper & lower apartments of this Duplex, so one large space was created in the refurbishment. The internal redesign features clean, modern lines, while externally, the house was freshened up, while still retaining the original period features. The above view is from the front street entrance, with fabulous Sydney water views seen in the distance.
An original arched window in the entrance has been retained & highlighted. The Spanish Mission style of houses emerged in California during the period between the 2 World Wars & here in Austalia, we followed on very closely from the U.S. example. The style particularly suited our Mediterranean climate. Typically houses of this style often feature terracotta tiled roofs, stuccoed external surfaces, external spiral columns, parapets, loggias, timber window shutters, arched doorways & windows, ornamental metalwork & balconettes. This property has all those features in abundance.
The Living Room looking out to those captivating water vistas.
The Dining space & balcony with the same fabulous views.
Clean, simple lines in the Living Room.
Polished boards & simple cabinetry in the kitchen.
Love the bathroom!
And the curvy wall!
The rear aspect, with dress-circle views over Bondi Beach.
Oh such relaxing, clean simple lines. Dreamy. Your comment on my bloggy today made me spit my coffee out. The mental image you created was magical. A-M xx
oh, I could definitely live in that bathroom! I had to laugh Millie at your pies comment, hilarious!! what would have happened if I was a pie supporter ;) (never!!)
This home looks like the hubby agreed to hiring help for a spring clean! Or maybe a weekly cleaner? My house is Spanish Mission style built in the 1930's so I always love seeing what others have done with them. I dream of turning mine into a grand dame one day! Ax
Life in the little village of Stirling in the hills above Adelaide in South Australia is just about as good as it gets! Enjoying a cool climate and 'hill-station' feel, Stirling is well-known for its 19th-century stone villas set on large grounds dense with roses, camellias, rhododendrons and huge old Oaks.
With 3 sons, 3 grandchildren & my work in a scientific business dominated by yes, more men, The Laurel Hedge was born out of my sheer desperation for something the boys just don't get & never will!
Quote This!
'No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it all too seriously.'
15 years of renovating was over - we'd just completed everything & were really enjoying our lovely old Victorian villa in the Eastern suburbs of Adelaide. However we'd always had a fondness for the country life & without warning we found ourselves transported by alien beings disguised as Real Estate Agents to a house on 1/2 acre of wild, rambling gardens in Stirling!
The house is circa 1972 & with all the 70's features. Open-faced brown brick walls, raked ceilings, exposed beams, split levels - totally yuk! However, it's inherent design is great & the location amazing - tucked behind a wonderful old laurel hedge in a quiet country lane in the heart of gorgeous Stirling.
that bathroom is fantastic and do I spy I little recessed nook? Just like yours......xoxo
