Not Quite Sure

Our local country cinema is no Art House movie theatre, just the big commercial Box Office blockbusters are screened. So when I saw they where doing a quick 2 day screening of Jane Campion's Bright Star, I jumped into the Millie-mobile, hurtled up the Freeway on Friday arvo & throw myself into a seat quick smart. And with the added bonus of a 'Private Screening', as I was the only one there! Although I'd heard mixed reviews, I was optimistic that I would enjoy it, but left feeling not as satisfied as I'd hoped. It was a very metered & controlled film, the actors did a mostly fine job, but didn't seem to inhabit their roles totally & draw me in to their world. I did a bit of a MOTH & got the wriggles several times throughout, always a good indication that all was not well. I'd value your comments, is it just me or are there others who experienced a case of the wrigglie MOTH's too watching this film.

  3. Hmm, tough one Millie. I felt a bit ambivalent also. It moved at a glacial pace, but the costuming was so exquisite, that it captured my attention throughout. More of a series of impossibly beautiful still-lifes, with an incidental story-line. As for Keats...I think "mealy-mouthed" would be an apt description...surely his destiny had consumption written all over it?

I would have loved to have seen this movie with you Millie. We could have whispered derogatory comments throughout and thrown popcorn at the screen every time Keats pasty faced visage appeared or Abbie Cornish had a temper tantrum. Meredy xo.

  4. Hmmm...now I am in a dilemna. I will see it and report back. I love period pieces, it would take a lot for me to really not like a film :)

  5. Well I loved it ... But will love any film NOT dubbed over in French at the moment. Think I will like NINE better though! I would probably have been a little less perturbed about the excrutiatingly slow pace if I hadn't been with a French girlfriend. Mind you - at least she had the time to sink in the English. Thank God I didn't drag the kids in there!

  6. I love period movies as well. This trailer is beautiful. It's disappointing to hear the movie may not be. Still, I will see it when I can.

  7. I was seriously bummed, I had so wanted to watch this. The only thing to LOVE was the costumes. With that said there was no chemistry between actors and the acting was to removed. The only one that acted with any interest at all was the little sister. This was actually a very painfully boring movie for me to watch so I did not finish it. I would have not been able to watch in length at the theater. I watch period dramas all the time and this was a big DUD!

  8. Hi Millie, this looks like a movie I would have bolted to get a seat for as well! The preveiw looks amazing, but then they always show the best bits, don't they?Dissapointing when they don't live up to our hopes and expectations... I will still see it, and try not to fidget too much, as the slower moving stories make me a little twitchy too!

  9. Hi Millie,

I have not been to see this, but will report back when I do. Mind you I may just wait until it comes out on video.
I do love period dramas and the costumes look great.
Sad when they do not live up to your expectations.

    Have a great week
    Hugs

  10. Hi Millie

I saw the film just last night. I found it visually stunning completely in love with her pale blue panelled bedroom - sigh. It took me awhile to get into it, but then I was totally feeling the pain and frustration of the characters. I think I give it a 7 1/2 out of 10.

  12. My friend Bronwyn went to see the movie and said that toward the end of the film she was muttering to herself, "Die Keats Die!". She is very mild mannered usually so I saw this as the ultimate critique.

  13. Will report back after I see it later this week, but my nanny keeps telling me how overcome emotionally she was upon seeing it.

  14. Millie - This looks like one of those films I would have run to see when we were living in Aus & oohed and aahed over the scenery - maybe I'm more discriminating now we are living amongst those daffodils and bluebells!! Haven't seen it though so will look out for it!

  15. I love it..the "Millie Mobile"! I did a post on this movie before release and although I spotted it for rent in what we call "Red Boxes" here in the U.S. for $1., I couldn't bring myself to part with a lonely buck. But, now I'm tempted to rent it & see what I think. I don't believe it did well but was shocked you were the only person there!! Perhaps for the costumes, and scenery alone it's for the dollar? Hope your week is going along well?! x deb

  16. I love the fashion and when I first saw the preview I thought that I would love to see this when it comes out on dvd (by myself)or at the theater with my girlfriend. But after reading your post and re-watching the clip, I thought that the actors did not seem deep and perhaps they used all of the good parts of the movie in the clip. I hate it when they do that. I might still watch it on dvd in my P.Js and nutella.
